Cebu City, Philippines – On January 24-25, 2015, the 6th Global Voice Citizen Media Summit was held in the Cebu City Provincial Capitol with the theme of “The Open Internet: Local Perspectives, Global Rights”.

FMA was among the many organizations who participated in this summit, along with other activists, advocates, social media experts, bloggers, tech groups who came from over 70 countries from all over the world.

Mr. Al Alegre, FMA’s Executive Director, was one of the speakers who opened the Global Voices Summit, he talked on the plenary on ‘Protecting the Open Internet is Everybody’s Business’. He discussed the current Philippine Internet situation, as well as different government policies and corporate practices that endanger the users’ rights of free expression and privacy.

GV 2015 is an avenue that gathers advocates from different parts of the world to share their experiences basing on their own contexts. Cultural, economic, political, and even religious factors affect the different situations of the participants which makes the discussion and exchange of ideas an incredible platform for learning and a better understanding of various perspectives and circumstances.

Aside from the enormous amount of information from the Summit, participants also experienced the rich culture of the Queen City of the South as it has recently celebrated one of the country’s biggest festivals, the Sinulog. An after-Summit party was held for everyone to have a good time and further connect with new friends.

The Global Voices Summit 2015 is the perfect mix of work and fun, education and tradition, and the convergence of local perspectives and global rights for everyone who became part of it.
